Principal Optical Engineer - Quantum Startup - Boston - 240k+
An advanced technology company developing next-generation computing systems is seeking a Principal Optical Engineer to play a key role in the design and delivery of complex optical hardware platforms.
This is a senior individual contributor position with significant technical leadership responsibility, working across R&D, engineering, and product teams to bring highly sophisticated optical systems from concept through to deployment.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the design and development of advanced optical modules and systems for cutting-edge hardware platforms
- Partner closely with physicists, scientists, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to translate research into scalable products
- Provide technical leadership across optical, mechanical, electronic, and systems engineering functions
- Drive optical architecture decisions from early-stage concept through production and deployment
- Mentor engineers and help shape engineering best practices, standards, and development processes
- Solve complex technical challenges and influence long-term product direction
- Support system integration, testing, troubleshooting, and customer deployments where required
What We’re Looking For
- Advanced degree in Optics, Optical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field
- Significant industry experience developing complex optical systems in commercial engineering environments
- Experience taking sophisticated hardware systems from concept to production
- Strong experience with optical simulation and mechanical CAD tools
- Comfortable operating in both fast-moving and enterprise-scale environments
